Appreciation post: the rain barrel at my neighbor's house in Portland changed my whole watering game

Last month I was over at my neighbor's place helping her repot some ferns and she showed me this 55 gallon rain barrel she rigged up under her downspout. She said she hasn't used a hose since April. Honestly, I always thought those barrels got gross or attracted mosquitoes, but hers had a mesh top and a spigot near the bottom. I tried it on my veggies last week and the water is way softer than tap. My tomatoes perked up in like 2 days. Has anyone else switched to rain collection, and do you do anything to keep the algae down?
