Heard a guy at the plant nursery say he's only into plants that flower

I was picking up some soil in Tacoma and this guy was telling the clerk he doesn't see the point in ferns or hostas because they don't bloom. It made me think, isn't that kind of missing the whole picture? I mean, the texture of a Japanese painted fern or the way a big hosta leaf catches rain is its own kind of beauty, right? Do you think some people get too hung up on just the flowers?

Yeah, that's such a limited way to look at it... like only listening for the drum solo in a song and missing the whole bassline. The structure and leaves of a plant give a garden its shape and feel all year long, not just for a few weeks when something blooms. My shady corner is mostly ferns and hostas, and the quiet green of it all is the whole point for me.

Seriously, that's such a narrow way to see a garden.
