Honestly, I was killing my fiddle leaf fig by watering it every Tuesday for a year

I had this whole schedule, right? Every Tuesday morning, I'd give it a full cup of water. Last week, the leaves started dropping like crazy and the soil felt soggy. My friend, who runs a plant nursery in Tampa, came over and just stuck her finger in the dirt. She said, "You're drowning it. You water when it's dry two inches down, not because it's Tuesday." Ngl, I felt pretty dumb. How do you guys check your plants without overthinking it?

Okay but is it really that big of a deal? Plants die sometimes, it's not like you meant to hurt it. That whole "two inches down" rule just seems like another thing to stress over. Can't we just give them a drink when they look sad?

My 7th dead fern proves the two-inch rule is my only hope.

Wait, you think waiting for a sad look is better? That's actually the most stressful way to do it. By the time a plant looks droopy or pale, it's already super thirsty and in trouble. Checking the soil is way easier than trying to guess from its mood. My peace lily throws a full dramatic wilt when it's dry, but my snake plant would just quietly rot if I waited for a sad sign.
