I finally stopped using expensive potting soil for my succulents

Used to buy that premium cactus mix for like $12 a bag. Waste of money. Mixing my own with cheap gravel and sand from Home Depot works way better. Did it after a root rot killed my echeveria last August. No more soggy roots. Anybody else just use regular dirt mixed with rocks?

Home Depot sand is actually construction sand which compacts and holds MORE water, not less. Grab some chicken grit from a feed store - it's cheap and actually drains right.

In my experience those cheap mixes still drain way too slow for succulents.

Yeah the way I water succulents they'd drown in tap water.
