My friend said my plant care was basically just 'panic watering'

She pointed out last spring that I was drowning my Monstera deliciosa in Austin with a full cup every other day, calling it reactive, not proactive. I switched to checking the soil moisture with my finger two inches down and now only water when it's dry. Has anyone else had a simple tip totally flip their plant parenting style?

lol panic watering is such a perfect way to put it. I did the same thing with a snake plant until someone told me to ignore it for like a month. Sticking my finger in the dirt felt weird at first but now it's just habit. That one change saved so many plants from my over loving care.

Disagree about the finger test being the best way. It only tells you about the top inch and some plants have deep roots that are still dry. You gotta learn what each plant actually looks like when it's thirsty.

Can confirm my plants survived my overbearing love.
