Old timer at the community garden told me I was coddling my seedlings too much

He said to quit babying them with filtered water and hand warming the soil because roots need to toughen up to survive transplant shock, and after losing half my tomatoes last season I finally tried his method this spring and they're way sturdier now, has anyone else had to unlearn all the gentle stuff they thought was helping?

Honestly I was skeptical but three weeks in I saw the difference.

Weren't you worried you'd stunt them at first, or did you just trust the old guy knew what he was talking about?

Three weeks in and my plants were visibly taller.

Did that old timer actually know his stuff or did you just get lucky with the soil?
