TIL that venus flytraps only eat about 5 bugs a month naturally
I was reading this paper from NC State about Venus flytraps in the wild and found out they only catch like 4 or 5 insects a month in their natural habitat. The traps actually close maybe 12 times before they die off, so they're super selective. I've been overfeeding mine for months thinking it needed more. Has anyone else messed this up with their carnivorous plants?

Oh man, my buddy Jake got super into carnivorous plants last year and went all out. He bought a fancy grow light and was feeding his Venus flytrap a crushed-up ant every single day because he thought it was starving. After a couple months, all the traps turned black and the thing looked dead. He finally looked it up and realized he was basically force-feeding it to death. Now he just lets it sit by the window and catch whatever wanders in, and it's actually doing fine.

Honestly, I wonder if the bugs they eat in the wild are just bigger than what we feed them at home.
