Why does nobody mention that monochromatic gardens are way harder to pull off than mixed borders
I spent last spring planting an all-white cottage garden and ended up with 5 different shades of off-white that looked like a messy laundry pile instead of elegant, and now I'm digging out half the bulbs to add some color back in next season, anyone else try a color theme and regret it?

The messy laundry pile comparison is way too accurate, I had the same thing happen with a purple theme that turned into a sad bruise palette. The thing people don't mention is that monochromatic gardens highlight every single weed, dead leaf, and soil stain since there's no color contrast to distract the eye. You end up doing more maintenance just to keep it looking intentional instead of accidental.

Oh man, YES. I tried an all silver and lavender theme one year thinking it would look so soothing and romantic. It looked like somebody spilled a bunch of old dust bunnies in my flowerbeds instead. The worst part was every time the lavender bloomed a slightly different shade it clashed so bad I ended up yanking half of it out. I swear monochromatic only looks good in photos taken by people who have a full time gardener following them around with clippers.
