My boss told me my code was too clever. She was right.

I spent 2 years writing these super fancy nested loops and one-liners. My boss at a dev shop in Austin finally sat me down and said "readability matters more than showing off." Now I write simple functions with clear variable names. Has anyone else had to unlearn showing off to become a better coder?

Totally been there. I used to write these insane list comprehensions that took me 10 minutes to parse later, and my lead finally told me "just write the damn loop.

Wait, your lead actually had to tell you that like it wasn't obvious? I've sat there staring at a one-liner list comp for twenty minutes trying to remember if it was square brackets or curly braces for the thing I needed. Next time just add a few line breaks and some variable names that aren't just x, y, z - future you will actually appreciate it.

Was the "clever" code actually faster or just harder to read?
