My neighbor's 14 year old corrected my whole stance on recycling
Last Tuesday I was hauling cardboard bins to the curb and this kid from two doors down walks up and asks why I bother when half of it ends up in a landfill anyway. He showed me a video on his phone about how most municipal sorting facilities can't even handle mixed materials, and I sat there feeling dumb for never checking. It got me thinking about all the small routines I defend without ever questioning the actual payoff, not just with trash but with habits in general. Has anyone else had a moment where a kid made you rethink something you did on autopilot for years?

And that reminds me, my nephew once spent a whole car ride explaining why birdsong apps are actually bad for birds because they mess with their mating patterns. I had been using one to identify birds for years, never thought about how my phone chirping might be confusing actual birds. So the trash thing tracks. Kids now get exposed to really specific info from the internet that we never saw at that age, and they just assume we know it too. It makes you wonder how many other things we do daily are just based on outdated habits nobody checked. Ever catch yourself doing something simple and new that makes your old way feel kind of silly?
