The 300-page owner's manual I mocked for a decade finally won me over

I laughed at my neighbor in Spokane for reading every page on his zero-turn mower, but after I blew $450 on a transmission repair he could've spotted from page 214, I read mine cover to cover and caught a $30 filter fix that saved me a second shop visit, so has anyone else had a manual actually save them real cash?

Manuals are basically the fine print of the physical world, and I learned that the hard way when I ignored the part about greasing the fitting on my tiller. Cost me $120 and a weekend of cussing. Now I read the dang things like they're a thriller, which is way less exciting but a whole lot cheaper than a new carburetor. The funniest part is my neighbor still refuses to crack his open, he just pays the repair guy like it's a subscription service. Good for you for finally joining the club, the initiation fee just hurts a little.

Ha! Boy does that hit home. I once spent an entire afternoon trying to figure out why my lawnmower was smoking like a barbecue, only to find the oil cap had a little diagram showing the right fill line. I'd been pouring oil in blind for years, like a fool. Your neighbor sounds like my dad, he'd rather pay a guy than admit a manual might have one useful nugget in it. Take it from me, the paper cut you get flipping through the pages is way cheaper than the repair bill.
