The way people talk at parties shifted hard after 2020
I went to a backyard get together in Austin last weekend and realized something weird. Before the pandemic, small talk was all about what you did for work or where you went on vacation. Now it is almost completely about housing costs and how messed up the rental market is. I noticed this change about 2 years ago when everyone started complaining about their landlords instead of their bosses. It feels like the economic pinch got so real for people my age that we can't even fake a normal conversation anymore. Even at this party with people in their 30s, the first question someone asked me was how much my rent went up this year. Has anyone else picked up on this shift in casual chats?

wait is this a gen z thing or is it hitting millennials too? i asked my friend jenna about this cause she went to some cookout in dallas last month and she said it was literally nonstop complaints about HVAC repairs. like someone brought up their water heater breaking and suddenly everyone was trading numbers for plumbers and comparing how much they got gouged by appliance repair guys. she said by the end of the night this one dude was literally crying about his foundation issues. nobody even mentioned a vacation or a promotion the whole time.

My neighbor Sarah went to a housewarming party last month and said the same thing. She walked in with a bottle of wine and before she even set it down, someone asked if she had seen the new zoning laws. By midnight, three people were comparing their mortgage rates like it was a competition. Nobody even asked what she did for a living until she was leaving. The whole night was just people trading stories about contractors that ghosted them and how their property taxes doubled.
