Why does nobody talk about how much easier fiberglass drywall tape is than paper tape for ceilings
After mudding three basement rooms in my house last month, I switched to fiberglass mesh tape halfway through and finished the last room in half the time with way less frustration, so who actually swears by paper tape and why.

Oh man, I had the exact same revelation! It's like once you try the easy way you can't believe you ever fought with the hard way. I think this actually applies to so much more than drywall though. Like how people will keep using an old tool or method just because that's what they learned first, even when there's clearly a better option. It's like that stubbornness we all have about doing things the "right" way even when the right way is actually just harder. Paper tape has its place for sure on flat walls with perfect joints, but for ceilings where you're fighting gravity the whole time, fiberglass mesh is just common sense. I swear sometimes people get attached to their struggles.

Like, is it really about paper tape being better, or is it just that we've all been trained to think harder = better quality? I switched to fiberglass for my whole basement ceiling last year and it was a game changer, no sagging, no fighting to get it to stick. You're spot on that the stubbornness thing is real - people act like you're cutting corners but really you're just being smart about your time. And for corners, sure paper has its place, but for ceilings where you're literally working against gravity, why make it harder on yourself?
