Getting my brother up to speed on bricklaying basics

He just moved in and wants to help with my projects. I showed him how to spread mortar and level bricks. What are the key things to focus on when training a total beginner?

Focus on the RHYTHM of the work, not just the steps. I notice people always skip to the fancy stuff before getting the steady, repeatable motions down. For your brother, drill the mortar spread and leveling until it feels automatic, because that muscle memory is EVERYTHING. It's like teaching someone to drive, where smooth turns matter more than knowing the engine specs.

Understanding why each step matters can be just as important as the rhythm. Some people need the theory before the practice clicks.

It's just laying bricks, not rocket science.

Totally agree that muscle memory is everything. If you let him rush past the basics to try a whole wall, he'll just build bad habits right into his technique. The boring repetition at the start is what saves you from fixing a crooked mess later.
