My first mortar mix used a shovel and guesswork, now I weigh everything like a chef

Started out in 2016 on a small retaining wall job outside Columbus, back when I just dumped buckets of sand and cement until it looked right. Used to end up with either mud that sagged or mix so stiff I fought every brick. After a 200 foot walkway cracked in under 2 years, I switched to a digital scale and a 5 gallon bucket with marked lines. Now I use 6 parts sand, 1 part cement, and add water slowly until the ball test feels spot on. Has anyone else gone from eyeballing to measuring after a failure, or am I the only one who learned the hard way?
