Noticed my mortar was drying too fast on hot days, tried adding a little lime
We had a stretch of 90 degree days last month in Nashville and my joints were crusting over before I could strike them. Threw a small scoop of lime into the mix on a whim and it stayed workable for almost 20 minutes longer. Has anyone else experimented with lime in hot weather or is there a better trick out there?

Lime is a lifesaver on hot days. I started throwing a little hydrated lime in my mix last summer after fighting with fast drying mud in the Texas heat. It made a huge difference, kept everything workable way longer and the joints looked better too because I wasn't rushing.

Add some hydrated lime and keep your sand damp in the shade...

Yeah, I've been hearing more and more guys talking about lime in mortar mixes lately. There's this old school mason who does some YouTube videos, and he swears by it for keeping things from snapping too fast. He calls it the secret sauce for hot weather work. Never tried it myself, but seeing you guys back it up makes me think I should finally give it a shot next time I'm mixing.
