Pro tip: Tuck pointing with a bag vs. a gun is not even close

I used a grout bag for years because that's what the old guys taught me. Last month I finally tried a pointing gun on a job in Portland. Did the same 50 foot wall in 3 hours instead of 6. No wrist pain either. Has anyone else made the switch and felt stupid for waiting?

Did you find the grout gun harder to control at first?

Yeah man totally. The grout gun took me a good few tries before I felt like I had any control over it. My first couple of joints were way too thick in some spots and barely anything in others. I remember squeezing too hard and getting a big glob of grout all over the tile face instead of the joint. It was frustrating at first but after maybe three or four rows I started to get the hang of it.

Started with way too much pressure and ended up with a grout Jackson Pollock on my first tile... looked like modern art, but not the kind you want on your bathroom floor. I had to scrape half of it off with a putty knife and start over because it was so uneven. By the time I got to the third row, I finally figured out you need a light, steady squeeze, not a death grip like I was trying to wring out a wet rag. My hands were killing me by the end, but at least the joints looked decent.
