Rubber mallets for setting bricks? I thought it was a joke until a finicky patio job showed me how much cleaner the work gets.

Remember wrestling with a brick walkway a few years back, using a regular hammer and just chipping the edges like crazy. Switched to my dad's old rubber mallet and it was like night and day. The bricks just settled into the sand without any fight, no more jagged corners. It felt less like a battle and more like I was actually building something. Saved so much material from the scrap pile.

You know, it's not just about clean work. Have you felt how much less shock goes up your arm with a rubber mallet? Metal hammers can crack bricks if you hit them wrong, but rubber sort of cradles them into place. Isn't that a game changer for DIY folks who don't want to ruin materials? I learned that the hard way on a garden path last summer.

My neighbor Frank swore by his dead-blow mallet for patio stones. He said the sand inside helps it hit without bouncing back, which is a whole different thing from a regular rubber mallet. But I've seen the rubber on those things crack after a summer in the sun. How do you even judge when a mallet is too worn out to use on bricks without risking damage? I had one where the face got all gouged up from gravel, and it started marking the bricks. Is there a way to tell, or is it just a feel thing after you mess up a few?
