Saw a crew in Phoenix laying block with no string line and it made my stomach drop
Honestly I was driving past a new build off 7th Ave in Phoenix last Thursday and pulled over just to watch these guys work. They had a 40 foot run of 8 inch block going up and not one of them had a string line out, just eyeballing the course off the corner block. I hung around for maybe 15 minutes and you could already see the wall bowing out toward the middle, probably a half inch over that run. Tbh I wanted to say something but it wasn't my site and I didn't want to be that guy, so I just left. Has anyone else seen crews skipping string lines like this lately, or is it just a Phoenix thing?
Watched the exact same thing happen on a job in Goodyear last month and I almost lost it. Half inch of bow over 40 feet sounds about right, and by the time they get to the top plate that wall is gonna be walking all over the place. Block work lives and dies by the line, that's like day one stuff, and these crews act like lasers on one corner make up for it. Here's the thing that gets me though, the guy writing the check probably won't notice until the stucco guy starts stacking mud to hide the wave. You did the right thing not saying anything on someone else's site, but I bet the super would've shook your hand if you had.
