Serious question, why does everyone love those fancy corner trowels?
I've been laying brick for 12 years, started from nothing with just a basic margin trowel. Last month my trusty old corner trowel broke right in the middle of a retaining wall job in Akron, $150 job on the line. I grabbed my backup cheap one from the truck (the kind everyone hates on) and finished the whole thing without any issues. Am I the only one who thinks spending $40 on a fancy ergonomic corner trowel is a waste when the $8 model does the same thing?

Wait, are you really saying that $8 trowel lasted you through a whole job with no issues? Because I've seen those cheap ones flex and bend on the first mortar mix. They work fine for light stuff but hit a hard stone or a dry spot and they'll twist right out of shape. A good corner trowel is more about the steel holding its edge and not warping, not just about the price tag. You got lucky with that cheap one, but most guys I know would rather spend the extra money and not have to fight a flimsy tool halfway through a wall.

Huh, so you're saying it's purely luck and not technique? How many walls have you actually put up with a cheap trowel before you decided they're all junk?
