The day I realized my mortar mix was way too wet
After 6 years of laying brick, I finally watched an old timer at the supply yard mix his batch and it looked almost crumbly compared to mine. He told me I was basically making soup instead of mortar, and that's why my joints were always sinking. Anyone else have a moment where a small fix changed your whole process?

Agreed with @wood.faith, always thought wetter was better until I tried it dry.

And yeah that crumbly consistency is the real deal. Once I switched to a drier mix my joints stopped settling and I didn't have to keep going back to touch up my work. It feels wrong at first but the suction it gives the brick is way better.
