Thought lime mortar was just old timer nostalgia until I tore into a 1920s porch in Dayton
I always figured lime mortar was one of those things guys talk up because their grandpa used it. Told the homeowner on this porch job in Dayton we'd just repoint with type N and be done. Then I pulled a chunk of the old joint apart and the brick underneath was clean as the day it was laid. The portland patches from a 1998 repair down the same wall had spalled the face off three bricks already. That sold me. Now I mix 1:2:6 lime, cement, sand for anything pre-1950 and it tools way nicer in the heat too. Any of you running lime on older repoints, what ratio are you using when the brick is soft red common?
