Update: I stopped using the string line for long walls after what happened in Tucson
I have been laying block for 11 years and always ran a string line on anything over 20 feet. Last week on a job in Tucson, an old mason named Ray watched me set up and said my line was sagging in the middle heat. He showed me how he checks the line every 10 feet with a torpedo level and a tap of the blocks, and I could not believe how much straighter my courses came out. Now I do it on every wall, even short ones. Anybody else have a trick for keeping long runs tight?
