Warning: cheap mortar mixer burned my batch and my back

Picked up a $180 mortar mixer off an auction site last spring thinking it was a steal. First big job in Fresno, it jammed on the third load and stripped the gears while the paddle was buried in a stiff mix. Lost about $400 worth of materials and half a day tearing the drum apart. The motor housing got so hot it melted the plastic shroud around the shaft. I should've stuck with the rental unit from the supply yard for 60 bucks a day. Any of you guys run one of those cheaper units and regret it too, or is there a brand under 400 that actually holds up?

Cheap tools always cost more in the end, like buying bad tires twice.
