Burned my chili so bad last Tuesday the smoke alarm went off for 20 minutes

I was trying to stretch a pound of ground beef into a week of meals and got distracted by a YouTube video about composting. The bottom of my pot is now a permanent black crust, has anyone else ruined a cheap pot this way?

And that pot is never coming back either. I did the same thing with a stainless steel one trying to make cheap lentil soup and now the bottom looks like a Jackson Pollock painting of char. You think you can scrub it off but that black stuff is married to the metal forever. At this point I just call it "non-stick seasoning" and pretend it adds flavor. Honestly though the smoke detector is the real victim here, mine still flinches every time I turn the stove on above medium heat.

Is it really that serious though? I mean a little char on the pot just adds character, and the smoke alarm is probably just being dramatic.
