Forgot to soak my beans overnight for like a decade

I always thought dried beans just took forever to cook until a coworker last week asked why I didn't soak them first - now my chili comes together in under an hour instead of 3. Has anyone else been skipping this step and just dealing with it?

Yeah @the_wesley, the quick soak trick saved me too, no more planning around dinner all week.

Right, the "just dealing with it" part... that was me for way too long. I figured beans were supposed to be a long term commitment, like a slow cooker situation. Then a friend told me about the quick soak method - boil them for a few minutes, then let them sit for an hour. Total game changer. It saved me from having to plan my meals a whole day ahead, which I'm never good at.

It's funny how many kitchen "rules" are really just habits nobody questions. There's this whole category of stuff where you assume it has to be hard because that's how you were shown, then someone casually drops a faster way and you feel like you wasted years. Not even about beans specifically, but about how we approach cooking in general - a lot of the old timers just accepted the extra time and passed it on without thinking. Probably applies to more than just food too, like those little workarounds at jobs or hobbies that become gospel until someone says "wait, why".
