Got a bag of dried chickpeas for $1.50 and spent 4 hours trying to figure out why they wouldn't soften

Soaked them overnight, boiled them for like 2 hours and they were still hard as rocks. Turns out my tap water is too hard and I needed to add baking soda or use bottled water. Has anyone else run into this with cheap dried beans?

Used to swear by tap water. You just changed my mind completely.

First time I tried sparkling water I thought it was broken... still not sure if I like it.
