Picked canned chickpeas over dry beans and regretted it instantly

Last Tuesday I was staring at two bags of beans in my pantry, trying to decide if I had the patience for dry ones. I went with the canned chickpeas because dinner needed to be ready in 30 minutes and my kids were already hangry. Turned out the can was dented on the bottom and leaked all over my counter, plus they were way mushier than I wanted for my curry. Has anyone else had a cheap shortcut totally backfire like that?

Oh man, didn't you just hit a nerve with that one? I bought a dented can of diced tomatoes last month and spent twenty minutes cleaning tomato juice off my ceiling.

Dented cans are usually fine if you check for leaks first though. @the_mary sounds like you just picked a bad can with a hole in it because the seal was broken.

I used to be the person who swore canned beans were just as good as dry ones no matter what. Then I got a can of chickpeas that had that weird metallic taste from sitting too long on the shelf, and the texture was like eating little balls of paste. It completely ruined my soup and I had to order takeout instead, so I finally broke down and learned how to actually cook dry beans properly. Now I keep a bag of dry ones in the pantry and just soak them overnight, it's a pain but the difference is real.
