Question about whether buying in bulk actually saves money for a single person

I keep seeing people in this community recommend buying giant bags of rice or 5-pound blocks of cheese to save money. But I live alone and I tried this last month with a 10-pound bag of onions from Costco. By week 3, half of them had sprouted or gone soft. I ended up throwing away maybe 4 dollars worth. For a single person, is bulk buying really worth it? I feel like I would save more by just buying smaller amounts even if the per-pound price is higher. Has anyone else figured out a good balance for single portions?

Ha! I'm still single and my pantry's single too. Just one bag of chips.

My buddy tried buying bulk rice and pasta, ended up with a pantry moth infestation that took months to get rid of. He said the money he saved on the bag was totally eaten up by the cost of new food containers and traps. Sometimes smaller purchases are just the smarter play for one person.

Gets me thinking about how we're all kind of trained to think bigger is always better. Like buying in bulk feels like you're beating the system somehow, but nobody talks about the hidden costs of storing all that stuff. My neighbor did the same thing with flour and ended up finding mouse droppings in the bag three months later. It's funny how we'll spend money on those giant warehouse memberships and then throw out half of what we buy because it goes bad or gets invaded by bugs. Sometimes the real smart move is just buying what you'll actually use before it turns into a science experiment.
