Remember when a bag of dried beans cost 79 cents?

I was at the grocery store last week and saw a 2lb bag of pinto beans for $3.49. That same bag was 79 cents back in 2021 when I first started cooking from scratch. I remember picking up a 10lb sack for $4.50 at the local Aldi in Austin three years ago. Anyone else notice bean prices have tripled but theyre still the cheapest protein around?

Has it really gotten that bad already? I bought a bag of black beans last week and nearly dropped my wallet when I saw $3.99 for a 2 pounder. Back in 2020 I could stock my pantry with a 20 pound sack of pinto beans for under 10 bucks. Still the best deal in the store compared to meat these days, but it sure stings to see the old price tags.

My local store just marked up the canned tomatoes to $2.29 a can. That's the stuff I use for chili and pasta sauce year round. At that price I'm almost better off growing my own.
