Took me 8 years to realize I was over-stuffing my slow cooker every single time

I was making chili last Sunday and it came out watery again. My buddy Mike came over and saw me cramming the cooker full and just laughed. He said 'dude your thing is only supposed to be half full or the heat can't circulate.' I always thought more food = more efficient. Nope. Now I use a 4 quart instead of my 6 quart for smaller batches and stuff actually thickens up. Anyone else learn a basic cooking rule way later than they should have?

So wait, did you just guess wrong or did nobody ever tell you about the 2/3 full rule?

Oh wait @kelly.charlie are you saying the rule is for scooping or for the actual fullness?

Ngl I think the real issue is people using the wrong size cooker for their lifestyle. You mentioned switching from a 6 to a 4 quart which is smart, but most folks just buy one big one and force it to work for everything. I keep a 3 quart for weeknight meals and a 7 quart for when I'm feeding the crew, never had the watery problem since I matched the pot to the batch.
