Appreciation post: Hostels in 2025 vs. hostels in 2015
I stayed in a hostel in Barcelona last week and it had private curtains on every bunk, a real pillow, and a quiet hour at 10 PM. Back in 2015 I slept on a squeaky metal frame in a 16-bed room in Rome with no lockers that worked. What changed? Competition and online reviews. Hostels realized people would pay $5 more for basic privacy. Has anyone else noticed this shift making hostels actually worth staying in again?

Stayed in one last month in Prague and honestly it felt like a sterile hotel waiting room. Miss the chaos and meeting strangers over bad coffee in the common area. Sometimes those rough hostels made for the best stories.

Wait, is anyone talking about how those fancy hostels actually make it harder to meet people? Tbh, I think the whole 'social atmosphere' gets killed when everyone's got their own little pod and noise-cancelling headphones.

Stayed at one in Barcelona last year called Casa Gracia. Walked in and saw those capsule beds with privacy curtains, USB ports, and reading lights. Thought it was great at first because I could charge my phone without fighting for an outlet. But three days in I realized I barely knew anyone's name. The old hostel I stayed at in Rome had bunk beds bunked so close you had to talk to the person next to you. That's where I ended up joining a random group for dinner and exploring the city with strangers. You're right, the fancy setup killed that.
