Found the $15 trick that beats prepaid tourist SIM cards every time

I kept watching people at the airport in Lisbon drop $50 on tourist SIM cards when I got mine for $15 at a corner kiosk. Here's the thing, local prepaid carriers almost always have cheaper data plans than the ones marketed to travelers, you just have to know which store to hit. Last month I needed maps and translation for 10 days in Portugal, the local carrier gave me 20GB for 15 euros while the tourist SIM at the arrivals hall was 45 euros for only 10GB. The catch is you need a passport to register it and some patience with the clerk who may not speak English. Has anyone else found a similar trick in other countries, or do you stick with the airport convenience?
