Got stranded in Lisbon with a dead phone and 12 euros in cash

Last spring I was wandering around the Alfama district in Lisbon and my phone battery died right as I needed to find my hostel. I had no map, just 12 euros in my pocket, and I could not remember the street name to save my life. I ended up following a group of American tourists who were loudly talking about their cheap hostel, and it turned out to be the same one I booked. Have any of you dealt with a dead phone in a foreign city, and what is your backup trick that does not cost anything?
