Hit 50 countries last week on a 20 dollar budget per day
I always thought you needed thousands to travel far, but after tracking every penny through Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe I realized my total for 6 months was under 3 grand flights included - has anyone else run the numbers and been shocked at how cheap it can actually get?

Wait, did you actually track everything or just estimate? I've done similar trips and the numbers never added up that clean for me. Flights alone cost me 400-600 just to get to Southeast Asia from the US, and that was with a deal. Then you've got visas, mandatory travel insurance, random gear replacements when stuff breaks, and those "just in case" costs like emergency dentist visits or last-minute accommodation when a bus gets cancelled. Not saying it can't be done cheap, but 3 grand for 6 months with flights included feels like you're forgetting the little stuff that always creeps up.

Ray, you're hitting on stuff that a lot of people just gloss over... I tracked everything on a few trips and those "little" costs always add up way more than you'd think. Visa runs, replacing a broken sandal or a cheap phone charger, it all eats into the budget really fast. My last trip I had to pay for a last minute hotel when a night bus broke down at 2am, that alone was like 30 bucks I didn't plan for. Three grand for six months with flights sounds like a rough estimate more than a real budget, honestly.

Whoa, hold up, I actually think that number is legit if you're REALLY strict about it. I did a similar trip and kept a detailed spreadsheet, and I was honestly shocked how low you can get daily costs if you stick to street food and homestays in places like Vietnam or Romania.

@the_wesley probably tracks his coffee spending down to the penny, bless his heart.
