Hostel vs. hostel in Mexico City... I picked the cheap one and regret it
I was in Mexico City last month and had to choose between a $12 a night hostel in Roma Norte and a $20 one in Condesa. I went with the cheaper one thinking I'd save cash for food... but the bed was basically a cot with a sheet, the wifi barely worked, and I couldn't sleep from the street noise. Ended up spending extra on coffee just to function and missed a whole day of sightseeing. Has anyone else had a budget choice that backfired like this?

A cot with a single sheet? For $12 a night? I've stayed in some rough hostels but that's basically a prison cot. No wonder you couldn't sleep or function the next day.

Oh man, that sounds absolutely terrible! I feel for you so much. A cot with just one thin sheet and no mattress pad or blanket? That's like sleeping on a concrete slab with a paper towel over it lol. I've definitely had my share of awful hostel experiences but that takes the cake. You must have been freezing and sore the whole night, no wonder you couldn't think straight the next day. Honestly, for $12 they could at least throw in a crappy pillow or a second sheet. Hope you're doing better now and found somewhere decent to crash.

Ugh brutal! @murray.jana nailed it, my buddy had the same thing happen in a hostel in Prague once and said he literally just wrapped himself in his backpack to stay warm.
