I think staying in hostels is actually more expensive than camping in most of Europe

I spent 6 weeks backpacking through Portugal and Spain last summer and my hostel bills added up to nearly 900 euros, while the people I met camping paid maybe 200 total for site fees. I tried sleeping in parks and using free municipal campgrounds near smaller towns, but the real trick was just asking local tourist info offices where to pitch a tent for free. Has anyone else found a better budget option than hostels for long trips abroad?

Camping is totally the way to go, met some Dutch guys who just hammocked between trees for free the whole time.

I did the same thing in Norway last summer @ruby_jones and it saved me a ton on accommodation lol.
