I used to think hostels were just for broke college kids, now I won't stay anywhere else
Two years back, I was all about cheap hotels and would spend like $80 a night in Prague. Then a friend made me try a hostel with a private room, and I paid $35 a night in Lisbon. The money I saved went straight to food and tours. Anyone got other cheap sleep tips that don't involve sharing a bunk?

Ever try a monastery stay? I slept in a tiny room at one in Greece for like 20 euros a night, breakfast included. It was dead quiet and had this wild garden with cats everywhere.

Oh man, that's a great start. But I gotta say, calling a private room in a hostel a "hostel" is kinda cheating (it's basically just a budget hotel at that point). The real magic is in the social dorms, even if you're past college. I met a retired teacher in a Berlin dorm who gave me the best city map notes ever. You save even more cash and the stories are way better.

My bunkmate in Prague was a Finnish fisherman who shared homemade salami. Those random dorm connections really do shape a trip more than any guidebook. You're right about the magic being in the shared spaces.

Saw a travel blog once that called hostels "story factories." That Finnish fisherman with his salami is exactly what they meant. Those weird little moments stick with you forever.
