Just found out AAA travel discounts can pay for the membership in one trip

I was looking into booking a hotel in Phoenix for next month and stumbled on a fact I never knew. AAA members can get up to 20% off at certain hotels plus free breakfast. I checked three hotels I was looking at and two of them had AAA rates that were cheaper than any other discount code I found. The annual membership is about $60 and I saved $45 on just one night. Has anyone else used their auto club for travel deals or are there better memberships out there?

My buddy actually joined AAA just for the hotel discounts. He was driving to a wedding in San Diego and booked a room at a Hilton that was $40 cheaper per night with the AAA rate. By the second night he had already saved more than the membership cost. He said the front desk clerk even gave him a free upgrade when he showed his card, so it ended up being a really good deal for that trip.

Isn't the real trick here that you have to actually remember to ask for the AAA rate when you book? I've got friends who signed up years ago and still forget to check, basically wasting the membership on hotel discounts they never use. Saving $80 on a two-night stay is nice, but only if you actually bother to pull out the card at check-in and ask about it.

@ninaowens got lucky with that upgrade, but yeah it's like buying a gym membership and never going.
