Just realized I was wasting $50 a month on hostel dorms when hostels have private rooms

Back in 2018 I always booked dorm beds because I thought private rooms were overpriced. But last year I did the math and found that a private room in a hostel in Bangkok was only $12 more than a dorm bed per night. The extra cost was way less than what I spent on earplugs and sleep aids to deal with snorers. Now I filter for private rooms first and only check dorms if the price gap is under $10. Has anyone else found that hostels are hiding cheap private rooms in their booking options?

My snoring got so bad last year that even my own snoring woke me up two or three times a night. Dorms are the only option for me now because private rooms usually have thin walls and other people's snoring still carries through. Plus you miss out on the random social stuff that happens in dorms like meeting a Spanish guy at 2 AM who wants to share his bottle of cheap rum. I spent $12 extra on a private room in Hanoi and the AC broke at 3 AM with no staff around to fix it. Back at the dorm next door I just slept on the floor near the window and it was fine.

Has anyone thought about how earplugs or a white noise machine might solve the snoring issue better than switching rooms? I get the social stuff is fun, but fixing the root problem could save you more hassle than bouncing between dorms and privates.

Switched to private rooms last year and never looked back honestly.
