Met a guy in a Lisbon hostel who showed me how to eat for under 5 euros a day

He was from Germany and had been traveling for months. He took me to a tiny market near the Alfama district and pointed out the cheap local bread, cheese, and fruit. We made lunch there for about 3 euros each. Anyone know other cities where you can find a good market meal that cheap?

That's a great find in Lisbon. I've had similar luck in Budapest at the Great Market Hall, especially on the upper floor where the hot food stalls are. You can get a big bowl of goulash or langos for just a few euros. The trick is to look for places where locals are shopping for their own lunch, not the stands aimed at tourists.

Yeah, looking for where the locals go is always the move. Saves you from the overpriced tourist traps every time.
