My $3 hostel breakfast turned into a 2 hour cooking lesson in Madrid
Last month I stayed at this crazy cheap hostel in Madrid for 12 euros a night. The included breakfast was just bread and jam but the old Spanish guy running it saw me struggling to use the toaster and spent 45 minutes showing me how to make proper pan con tomate. He even brought out his own olive oil from home. Has anyone else accidentally gotten a free cooking class from a random hostel employee?

Yeah "hostel staff can be the best part of a trip" - I used to think they were just there to check people in and out. But after that guy taught me how to really toast bread the Spanish way, I totally get it now. He was so proud showing me his olive oil.

Love that story. Hostel staff can be the best part of a trip sometimes. Sounds like a really sweet old guy.

Funny how the smallest interactions stick with you. My hostel moment was with a guy who showed me how to properly hang a hammock without falling out. He was maybe 70, wiry arms, and he just laughed when I flopped onto the concrete the first three tries. Fourth time I stayed put and he gave me a thumbs up, then wandered off to sweep the patio. Makes you wonder what other simple stuff we're all doing wrong. Suppose that's what travel is for - failing gracefully in front of strangers.
