My $9 fuel gauge hack saved a rental car deposit in Denver

Rented a car in Denver last month and panicked at the pump because I always fill up right before returning, but the gauge lied due to the altitude. Apparently rental companies charge $8 a gallon if you bring it back not full, and I was 3 gallons off. A local told me to reset the trip meter and do the math on the tank size, not trust the dash readout. I burned 20 minutes with a calculator app but saved about $80 in fees.
