My backpack exploded at a hostel in Bangkok and I learned a lesson

I crammed a whole jar of peanut butter in my bag and it burst all over my clothes during a 3am bus ride from Koh Samui. Now I only pack toothpaste in a ziplock baggie, has anyone else had a toiletries disaster while traveling cheap?

Peanut butter was asking for trouble in a backpack.

My 5th grader's peanut butter sandwich survived a full week at the bottom of his bag once (granted, it was one of those squeeze packs, not the real stuff). I've actually had way more disasters with yogurt tubes or those little applesauce pouches that explode if you look at them wrong. The key is putting the PB in a separate ziplock baggie inside a hard plastic container, which takes like an extra 30 seconds. Besides, if you're worried about notebooks getting wrecked, maybe don't throw a loose sandwich in with your laptop charger anyway? Just saying, it's not the peanut butter's fault if you treat your bag like a trash can.

Peanut butter's basically a ticking time bomb in any bag, especially if you forget to double bag it (which we all do). The real issue nobody talks about is the structural damage - that smooshed sandwich can tear up a notebook or a charger in seconds.
