My hotel bill in Chicago went from $180 a night to $65

Last year I paid a fortune for a downtown room during a run. This time I booked a place in the Bridgeport neighborhood, a 15 minute train ride away. The difference was just over $110 PER NIGHT for a three day stay. I used a site that shows prices for the whole month and picked a Tuesday to Thursday trip instead of the weekend. Has anyone else saved big by staying in a less touristy area and using public transit?

Bridgeport is a solid choice, way more real than the Loop. I see this all the time with concerts now, people paying crazy prices to be right next to the arena when a twenty minute walk gets you a normal bar and a hotel for half the cost. The whole idea of a "premium" for being in the exact center feels like a trick we all just accepted. Public transit flattens the map and your bill.

It's the same with groceries near me. The store in the fancy neighborhood charges two dollars more for the exact same loaf of bread. We're paying for the idea of convenience and a certain zip code, not the actual thing. Once you notice it, you see the extra cost slapped on everything just for being in the "right" spot. A short bus ride always saves real money.

Downtown tax is just a lazy fee.
