Pro tip: my hostel roommate in Bangkok said you should never book the first night online, and I finally tried it
I met this guy named Dev at a hostel in Bangkok last month and he said he only books one night online, then walks around and asks places directly for a cheaper rate. I tried it in Chiang Mai and saved $9 a night, but got turned away at two places because they were full. Has anyone else done the walk in thing, and how do you pick which spots to try first without wasting a whole afternoon?
My buddy did this exact thing in Vietnam last summer and his trick was asking the tuk tuk drivers which guesthouses had rooms, since they know who's full and who isn't (they drop people off all day, so they hear everything). He'd hit like three places max and usually found something cheaper than the online price within an hour. The catch is it only really works in the slow season, when places are half empty and glad to fill a bed. In peak months he got burned bad and ended up paying more than if he'd just booked ahead. So yeah, it works, but timing matters way more than which spots you pick.
