Shoutout to the bus driver in Lisbon who helped me figure out the rechargeable card system after I spent 45 minutes trying to buy a single ticket from a broken machine.

Has anyone found a better way to handle public transport payments in foreign cities without getting stuck?

It's a global rule that the ticket machine is always broken. The real public transit system is just finding the one local person who takes pity on you. We've all become professional help seekers in foreign cities.

My friend once got a free ride from a crying bus driver.

Ever try just asking the driver directly if they're okay? Sometimes a little human kindness gets you further than any ticket.
