Shoutout to the hostel in Prague that taught me about free walking tours

Last month I was in Prague and the hostel staff told me about free city walking tours. You just show up and tip the guide at the end based on what you think it was worth. I did a three hour tour of the Old Town and only paid about 10 euros, which is way less than the 25 euro paid tours. The guide was great and showed us spots I would have missed. It felt like a real steal for seeing the city. Has anyone found other cities with good free tour options?

Three hours for just 10 euros is wild, I would have expected to pay at least double that for a guide. The paid tours must be really overpriced there.

The guide in Lisbon worked a full eight hours for that tip. That's barely over a euro an hour for their skill. It really puts the paid tour prices into a harsh light.

Totally agree, free tours often have guides who actually care about the history. My best tour was a free one in Prague where the guy was a local historian. Makes you wonder what you're really paying for with the expensive options.

Yeah spencer782 has a point, the paid ones do seem over the top. I found the same thing in Budapest, the free tour was honestly better than some I've paid for.
