Showerthought: The 'off season' trick only works if you actually know when it is

I keep seeing people say 'just travel during the off season to save money' like it's a magic bullet. But last year I booked a trip to Miami in what I thought was off season, August, and it was still packed and crazy expensive. Turnsout there's a difference between 'off season' for weather and 'off season' for tourism, and I mixed them up. Has anyone else fallen for this and found a better way to figure out the real cheap times to go?

Nah, August in Miami is still prime hurricane season.

Honestly, is it really that serious though? @the_wendy I feel like people overhype hurricane season every year and then nothing happens. Half the time it's just a lot of rain and some gusty wind.
