Switched from booking hotels to staying in hostels after a trip to New Orleans last fall and saved over $400 in five nights
I was nervous about sharing a room with strangers at first, but the private rooms in hostels are way cheaper than any hotel and you get to meet travelers who know all the best cheap eats around town.

Are you seriously risking your stuff getting stolen just to save a few bucks? I had my phone swiped from a hostel in Barcelona while I was asleep, security is a joke compared to a proper hotel with room safes and 24hr front desk. Plus good luck getting any real rest when people are stumbling in drunk at 3am or snoring like chainsaws two feet away. Private rooms help but then you're still sharing bathrooms with strangers who leave hair all over the place, not worth the hassle for me.
